The pUnK35T edcAmp: edcampLA & TEN new session ideas yOu shOuld try

Carpooling to EdCamp, and other great ideas:

: the readiness is all

Once a month I walked through the gates of hell.

I saw a girl get her faced torched by a can of AquaNet hair spray. I saw kids getting beaten up by a pack of psycho skinheads. I saw a vortex of humanity, 3,000 strong, moving as one [as if evoking Ragnarok.] I saw bands from England and Canada and Boston. I saw the worst of humanity and a glint of my shadow, at the Olympic auditorium during the mid 80s in Los Angeles.

Before Coachella, before Lollapalooza, GoldenVoice productions produced the largest punk shows in America in a hellhole known simply at The Olympic. In the middle of LA, in a not “nice” area, 4-5,000 early punks would gather to unleash a bucket of crazy. These shows were special. They sometimes would only happen once a month or every other month. We looked forward to these shows like…

IPEVO–Thanks For Sponsoring edcampARLINGTON

We are very excited to announce that IPEVO has become a sponsor of edcampARLINGTON. For those of you who don’t know, IPEVO is a company dedicated to bringing learning tools to your classroom at very affordable prices. At our school we have been using their document camera/webcam for a few years now and every year we buy more. In addition to document cameras, they also have line of accessories for using iPads in the classroom and also interactive whiteboard accessories.

Attendees at edcampARLINGTON will have have a chance at taking back to their classroom one of two great products from IPEVO.

VZ-1 Dual Mode (VGA/USB) Doc Camera

This camera puts choice into the teacher’s hands. You can choose to connect this camera to your projector or you can use it attached to a computer and use the images there. The small footprint will barely take up any space on the teacher’s desk.

IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System

Teachers that are looking to add an interactive whiteboard to their classroom will find IPEVO’s IS-01 a very affordable option. Plus, you could be taking this back to your school after attending edcampARLINGTON.

Not a Tweeter? No worries, Sanderling’s got you covered.

One of my favorite things about EdCamps is following along through Twitter. In fact, the very first time I even heard the word was from Jamie Gravell on Twitter as she attended EdCampNYC. I started following the hashtag and quickly learned which rooms were hopping and which I could do without.

But many are not on Twitter, and I have asked if they’ll be missing out on the EdCamp fun unless they start Tweet’n. As a Twitter evangelist, I wasn’t sure how to answer this. Of course I think all educators should be connected in some way, but the public nature of Twitter really isn’t for everyone.

Enter Sanderling. Accessed either through the app or website, Sanderling allows non-Twitters to join in on the fun and get connected with all the fabulous educators you’re sure to meet. I’ll be honest–I’m still not entirely clear on how it work. It’s just that new! But my understanding is that it’s like a scavenger hunt meets digital-archiving scrapbook. I hear it’s easy to use and really exciting when it starts aggregating pictures and quotes from attendees in other rooms. This video helped me understand it a bit better:

I can’t wait to use it myself. Only 2 more months to go!

Win a Chromebook from Alchemy Learning!

I was pretty excited when I learned that Alchemy Learning would be donating a Chromebook as a door prize for edcampARLINGTON. Chromebooks are great and who doesn’t love a free computer?

But then I started researching Alchemy Learning a bit more, and I’m actually more excited about their product–even just the free version. It’s a “cloud-based lesson-binder” that is perfect for team teaching, cross-curricular planning and of course flipped classes. In Arlington, we’ve started district-wide PLC training and this idea seems perfect for this new(ish) initiative. I just wish another Winter Break was coming up so I could dig in and starting playing around with it.

Adventures with Technology

Screen Shot 2013-12-04 at 9.37.24 PM

I have attended 3 years worth of EdCamps and Unconferences at 5 different venues. The memories and learning is hard to describe. But EdCamp is having 12 Days of Edcamp for people around the country to reflect and share. Follow the learning on Twitter.

After the 12 days, I will update my blog with all my personal reflections (see below). It has been a busy few weeks, so I have not had the chance to update until now.

Day 1 of #edcampgift: Recognize and celebrate an amazing colleague that you’ve met at Edcamp.

Day 2 of #edcampgift: Share the best Edcamp session you’ve ever attended.
